    Zachary is three!

It's Zack's third birthday today, and he is happy! We had some presents for him right away in the morning, and more for tonight. We're doing a low-key family dinner (with cake, of course!) this evening.

We're actually combining the parties for Emily and Zack into one at the end of the month. They really like going to 3-2-1 Bounce, and so it makes the most sense ($$$) to combine. Emily has more friends since she's in school. Zack likes playing with her friends too.

Zack just finished his Dex medication which gives him mood swings. He's been a handful the past few days. That will wear off soon and he'll be back to balanced Zack.

    Zack is a poster child

My sister Laurel has posted a series of photos with Zack as a poster boy. Her daughter Olivia's school was having a fund raiser for leukemia. Laurel suggested using Zack's photos to make it more real for the kids. You can see the results in her photo blog.

Now, Zack is in decent condition and he doesn't need the money himself. But, it's great that he can be an inspiration to these kids in their fundraiser. We've seen many families at the hospital whose kids are much worse off and are struggling with the funds to cover all the medical expenses. It's great that these kids were able to help.

Check out Laurel's blog when you have a chance. She's an artist, photographer and much more..

    Zack's first show

In the footage from the other night, we also shot a bit of Zachary hosting his own little show. For the most part, we just set the camera rolling. Emily had been filming a series of likes for part of her video, so he just built off that. This is mainly the ramblings of a two year old. If you don't speak two year old, it may be hard to understand. Sorry, there are no subtitles.

Luckily, we shot this a few days ago. He started back up on his Dex today for five days.. so he'll be a bit grouchy the rest of the week.

P.S. I think I finally got the aspect ratio right on the video encoder.

    The short story

Here's my attempt (ahem) at being brief. It's been a rough past 24 hours.

    • Emily came down with the flu and started <spoiler>vomiting</spoiler> from 11:30pm to 5am. Lots of fun there. (And lots of laundry to do.)
    • Zack came off the IV today, and they discharged him from the hospital at 3pm.
    • Tina has come down with the flu and the aforementioned spoiler.
    • I've been queezy and dizzy all day, but have held off any spoilers. (Knock on wood.)
    • Emily is staying home from school tomorrow (again) and Zack needs to go into the hospital in the morning again for additional therapy. I'll be off work again tomorrow.
    • I stocked up on Target brand pedialyte, chicken soup, malt-o-meal and hot wheels cars.

Here's hoping for the best! :)

P.S. I hear Tina running down the hallway.. I guess it's not the best for all of us. :(

    Zack Monday evening

Here's the update from this evening. Emily and I went to see Tina and Zack at the hospital this evening. I left work just about 4pm to pick up Emily and get on the highway. The 520 going East is a bear at the end of the day. Zack was actually most excited to see Emily and Emily to see Zack. Zack had some new hotwheels he wanted to show off.

It looks like Tina and Zack may be in for a bit longer. Basically, he's not eating. He's still sore in the stomach and he has some of the big D. The docs want to see him eating and passing it normally before they send him home. He ate some chips while I was there, which was better than I guess he had been doing. Hopefully he'll eat some more, because Emily and I want he and Tina home!

Here's a little contrast: The photo to the left here is of Zack back in June before most of his chemotherapy to compare to the photo now on the right. What a difference 6 months makes.. maybe you can't see it, but his face was a lot thinner back then.

After leaving the hospital, we stopped by the XNA party for a little while. Most of the "party" had died down and people were talking to the development team 1 on 1. It was great to see people in the community connecting with the team. I ran into Mike, so that was cool too.

    Zack update

Zack is still at the hospital. I'm heading over there before the traffic "strikes" to visit for the evening. Zack's talked to me twice on the phone today, so he really misses being home I think. He's in isolation due to potential for infecting other kids. He is doing well though. He has plenty of hot-wheels to play with! I'm going to pick up Emily early from school and head over. We'll see if they get out tonight. There's a chance they could be there another night though.

    Zack in One Man Band?

Here's something we noticed a while back when watching the Pixar animated short, One Man Band. With Zack's chemo came some hair loss and a pudgy baby-like face. That, combined with his cute big eyes made him a looka-bit-like for the little girl in One Man Band. Whaddya think?

Zack went to the ER Sunday

Zack's in the hospital. He got sick Sunday morning starting at about 1am. He <spoiler> threw up </spoiler> every hour or so Sunday morning.. 1.. 2.. 4.. etc. He wasn't able to keep water down, nor the medicine he's taking to counter the chemo medicine that makes him naseous. He was really pale and lathargic much of the day. The doctors recommended getting some benadryl, but that didn't help either. By about 5pm, we took him into the ER.

ER ran blood tests. They found that actually his ANC (white blood cell) count was up to just over 3000. This was actually surprising since it was in the 100's on Friday. He had some other levels off due to the loss of fluid and so they put him on an IV with benadryl and saline. They think he might have a viral infection, and wanted to keep him in ER overnight.

Emily and I left the ER just before 10pm. Tina called a short time ago, and she was still in the ER and they hadn't admitted her to encology. Hopefully they do soon. While Zachary was sound asleep, Tina was tired and unable to sleep in ER. Both of us had been up since 1am the night before, so sleep is a good thing to catch up on. We thought we had caught up on Saturday.. I guess that went out the window. :)

He should be fine. We're hoping they discharge him on Monday. Of course then I have to juggle my schedule with work and picking them up. Goiong over to Children's Hospital at the end of the work day can be a bear.. especially when you're just turning around to head back again. We'll see.

On a lighter note, we went to see Santa at Bellevue Square on Saturday. The kids were excited to see Santa. Even after the long wait in line. Zachary asked for a space shuttle. Emily asked for a beautiful dress. Her aunt Peni is sewing her a dress and she just got one for her Santa photos. I guess a girl can never have too many dresses. Is that right?  Zach looked really sharp in his shirt. Even with his comb over on the hair, he's really showing the hair loss. I've got to cut his hair soon because it really does look like a comb over with these long strands on top. It's just not worth it to have a salon trim him up when I can do it. He did feel really great about himself wearing his new jeans, button up shirt and sweater. He said himself that he looked handsome and wanted to tell Santa he had a new sweater. Of course, by the time the kids got up to Santa the line was really long and they were RUSHING the kids through. Tina said Santa didn't even ask them what they wanted.. they just posed for the $20 5x7 and shooed them out. It reminds me of the boot in the face in Christmas Story. Here is the photo album.

Zack is a tough guy. He took the IV in the chest and only cried a little. The needle scares me. They should have given me something to numb the pain. He's going to be just fine. He's done it so many times before. He'd make Master Chief proud. I'll update the blog tomorrow when he's released so you know he's out.

    Goodnight.
    Eric

Zack back - morning in Redmond

Zack was on the IV all day yesterday at the hospital. He needed some meds to counteract other meds he's been on. He's back home today. He'll have daily checkups in the morning for a while as he finishes his last month of heavy treatment before he goes into maintenance for three years. He's doing fine. Tina's doing fine. Emily received a trophy in the mail this week from Super Sibs that she's really proud of.

Someone please educate me. What's all the hype about how miserable it is to live in Seattle? It's December. The temperature is in the mid-40's. (As opposed to the 20's back in Minneapolis.) There's blue skies. Sun. The trees are green. No complaints here.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

    Hello all.

Our family has a lot to be thankful for this year. I have a new job. We have a new house. Our kids are smiling. Emily loves going to school. Tina and I are happy. Although Zack was diagnosed with leukemia this year, we couldn't have been more thankful for how things have been progressing. He's responding very well to treatment. My corporate health plan is keeping us well covered. Children's Hospital in Seattle is wonderful. It's a good year.

Looking back on the past several months, it was good to see Zack as he progressed through the treatment. It's hard to believe he's come so far in his chemo. He's actually gained a lot of weight in the process. As you can see, when he started out he was rather thin. There are two periods where he gained a lot of weight on the steroids. He's back to a baby-fat look. Here's a photo compilation. If you click on it you'll be taken to the photo gallery in my flickr album.

    Saturday

Zack started his heavy chemo yesterday. It will be two intense months of chemo to drive the cancer from his system.. then he goes into maintenance for 3 years. If we can all pull together and make it through these two months, it will be a lot easier from there. He was very grumpy this morning. He wants to be held a lot more. We can definately see the difference.. both his temper and energy level.

Our ex-neighbor Jan arrived this morning from Minneapolis. She was doing a medical run to Fred Hutch, so she's visiting with us today and staying over night. Then she flies back Sunday afternoon to Minnesota. The funny thing was, she ran into my Mom at Mayo Clinic in Rochester yesterday. That's really weird. Rochester is 2 hours out of Minneapolis. It's not very likely to just run into someone like that. It was in the elevator too.

We went out for dim sum in Seattle. Zack was really pale. He slept through the dim sum and when he awoke he was in pain. We gave him some oxy codol and that helped him out.

He played a bunch with Jan and Emily while I worked on putting up doors in the house this afternoon. We were supposed to go to a great halloween party this afternoon/evening, but since Zack's condition dropped down, we're not going. Emily wanted to go, but its tough with Zack not doing well. Zack is actually really tired right now and just wants to be held. Tina's hanging with him on the sofa. Jan and Emily are playing downstairs.

So, I think Jan, Emily and I will go to a park for a little while as the sun is about to set. Then we'll go grab dinner and come home to Tina and Zack. No partying for halloween this year.. of course this has been a year for skipped opportunities. Next year Zack should be a lot better and it will be easier for us all to go out and for the kids to have a sitter.

    That's life! :)

P.S. The kids should still be able to trick-or-treat on Tuesday evening. We'll see how Zack is doing. Worst case, Zack greets kids at the door.

    Zack is doing fine

Photo from the Seattle Woodlands Zoo a few weeks back. We've had some inquiries asking how Zack is doing now that he's back home. He is doing just fine. I think the biggest issue after surgery yesterday was that he knew he didn't want to stay at the hospital. He knows that being at the hospital means being away from the rest of the family and confined to a room.

He's obviously irritated at his wound. He kicked back on the couch and watched a kids movie about elephants in the evening. He was just fine. Before bed he was feeling irritable again. We gave him some pain killer. He was in very good spirits and went to bed just fine. There was only one "wake up" last night and this morning both kids were in bed with Tina and I. I'm just about to run off to take Emily to school and myself to work. Tina's staying home with Zack today. There's no need to check on the house today.

    Status Update

Zack is recovering from surgery at home. He had been throwing such a fit at the hospital, that as he screamed he started leaking blood from his wound. (That's not grape juice in the photo.) When I got the the hospital he was somewhat calm, but had thrown up. He was really hungry and ate food so fast he couldn't keep it down. Tina and Florence were tending to him. He was on Tina's shoulder when I arrived. He came to my shoulder and I asked him if he'd sleep. He was really cold, so Tina had a nice warm blanket for him. He started to sleep, and when I put him in the carseat, he fell completely under. I took Tina, Florence and Zack home before running back to work.

I met with the contractors at the house over lunch. The sheetrock guy and the painter. The sheetrock guy still has some fix up stuff he needs to finish. We've been on him to get everything done, and it looks like Thursday is the day the painters will let him in. Then they'll start in on the walls Thursday evening. Today the trim is still drying up. It's nice to see the new trim all painted. I left them a floor plan of the house and a spreadsheet with all the paint colors matched to the appropriate rooms.

    Zack Update: Out of surgery

Zack is now out of surgery. The procedure went fine, and they have put the port in his chest. Unfortunately, he's throwing fits from being still at the hospital. Tina just called and they weren't able to get more than a few words in to say they need to go home. He's screaming his head off from still being there. He's very paranoid since the last time he went in he had to stay two weeks confined mostly to a bed. So, I might have to leave work to go take them home. (1 car.)

    Zack in Hospital Monday

Just a short update to let everyone know Zack is going into the hospital Monday for surgery. He's having his port put in the second time. The first time it got infected and he had to be hospitalized for two weeks. This is the second attempt. He's been off medication of any kind for about a week in order to get his counts up. They all had dropped quite a bit when he was fighting the infection. He's a tough little guy, and we're praying that this is only a short stay. His check-in is at 7:15am at Children's Seattle. Then I have to run off to work with Emily until her school opens. Then it's off to her school and back to work. Then at 11am I need to meet with the contractors at our home to review some things that are wrong and the gameplan for this week. Then back to work. Then after work I pick up Emily and head off to pick up Tina and Zack from the hospital. It's going to be a long day.

    Zack back home

Here's a short update. Zack came home from the hospital on Friday. He's doing fine, and VERY happy to be home. Emily has a slight cold, so we have to be cautious around Zack. But the two of them missed each other so much. We all missed Tina as well.

Aunt Sally and Adam are taking a train in from Vancouver this morning. We'll be picking them up soon.

    Quick Update on the weekend

I'm at the hospital with Zack. I stayed the night last night. He's doing fine. He has to be on the antibiotic drip most of the day. He gets a little time off for a couple hours in the middle of the day. Then he can go to the playroom if his counts are high enough.

Friday: I managed to exchange the tub at Home Depot. One of the guys working on the house helped me get it on and off the car at the house. I had someone working at HD help there. I also picked up some additional trim, because we came up short. I'm not sure if that's because the wrong amount was delivered, or if I measured wrong. The day it was delivered I didn't get to check because I was so rushed. The lengths of the planks differed, and that might have had something to do with it.

Friday evening I met with one painter to pull together an estimate. He might be available to start this week.

Friday night, the plumber we were about to fire completed the tub installation. We need him after the tile guys are done with their work to put the faucets in. We have no other plumber options, and that's one piece where a plumber's expertise is needed. I just hope it can come together. The sink and the toilet we could do ourselves. The problem is that the plumber is leaving town next week, and needs to do his bit on Monday. We don't know if the tile will be ready in the tub. Fingers crossed.

Saturday: Florence, Emily and I took off to the house. I checked out the plumber's work from the night before and also met with a second painter. Both painters are giving me estimates.

I dropped Florence and Emily at the hospital. Tina and I spent the day getting stuff done. I played general contractor at the house for a while. The floor, trim and tile crews were at the house. I was answering questions and inspecting work. For instance, there is one doorway to the rec room where the trim doesn't go flush to the tile because the door jam sticks out too far. So, we worked to situate the trim in such a way we could fill the gap. I know that doesn't translate well, but its kind of the example of the things you have to watch for in any home construction project. We also had a dilemna caused by the plumber. He had cut out a chunk of sheetrock (without asking) to get the tub out. We decided it would be best if I went and picked up some new sheetrock and the tile guy would install that when he was putting in his wallboard. I had to pay him for his time.

Tina and I also spent a bunch of time going through color choices. We think we have the full selection for the house.

Sunday: I slept with Zack last night. He's downstairs right now while I ran up to do a couple things on the computer. (Including this post.) I have a TON of work to do today. I have to complete a "web plan" draft for work. I haven't had a chance to work on it given everything else going on. I have a review of the plan with my partners on Tuesday.. so I really have to be done on Monday. Argh.

Tina is home with Florence and Emily. She definately needed a break after being here a week with Zack. The current plan is for Zack to come back on the 1st. It's probably the same day as Tina's Aunt and Cousin arrive from Vancouver. It will be great to see them and spend labor day weekend with them. Zack will be really happy to be home from the hospital.

    That's all for now.

    Zack and House Update

Zack and Tina are still at the hospital. Right now it's one day at a time to know when they'll be able to come home. Zack is still on the IV. They've narrowed the antibiotics down to one type. This could end up taking until Wed/Thu, but it's possible he could be released earlier with an oral version of the antibiotics as well. He has a spinal poke on Wednesday, and that was when they originally targeted his next surgery. We doubt they'd do the surgery this soon. We still don't know for sure.

I think we're going to fire our plumber. We bought our tub on Saturday for him to put in on Monday. He was over on Thursday and said he didn't realize he'd have to carry the old one out and the new one in. Then he finally got to the house around 9-10pm last night. He called me to say that the new tub was all cracked up. I have to go see what that looks like. He said Home Depot must have dropped it in shipment. I don't know if he dropped it or not. We can't trust this guy given all the delays and excuses we've have. I have to now figure out how to get the tub back to Home Depot without Tina to help get it on the car. I also hope they'll exchange it. Then I have to find a new plumber. Tina and I originally argued last night over firing this guy before we had a new plumber lined up. Now I agree with her in that he's not trustworthy enough and we'll just have to try find a new one. If we can't, it means delays.. but we need to ensure the house will be in order too.

That's it for the five minute update.

    Extremely long Zack hospital update

We (Florence, Emily and I) just came back from the hospital after 10pm. Zack is a strong guy, and very energetic this evening. Despite that, he'll need to stay at the hospital a few more days. Tina is there with him. The doctors transferred him back up to SCCA (cancer ward) and that is a good thing. He gets better care there than in the general ward, where the nurses are not trained to deal with cancer patients.

Zack still has his splint on his leg for the IV. He had a yoga class earlier today and he moved around quite a bit with the splint on. This evening, he wanted to ride bikes. With his IV, he isn't allowed. It could get tangled up, since it's a foot IV. Instead, we roade around a bit on his lilypad. (The platform below his IV that he can sit on.) He also wanted to walk. He was amazing at walking with this splint on his leg. Even though it forced him on his tip-toe, that didn't slow him down. As he passed the nurses he'd say "hello. goodbye. see you later aligator!" They were all so amazed at how verbal he is. Little did they know his Dad talks ALL THE TIME and his Mom is always reading books.

Emily is sad this evening. She wants her Mommy to come home. Zack wants to come home too. Earlier today on the phone he said to me, "Daddy, I don't want to be at the hospital. I want to go home." Both kids are miserable with the situation. It can't be helped.

The infection he has involves a bug that needs an antibiotic that can only be administered via IV. That's why they need to keep him there. They said it may take a few days before he can come home. He has a wick in his chest where they removed the port. They slowly remove this string of gauze and with it the bacteria. Between that and the antibiotic, this should clear up. Zack appears to be strong, even with all this stuff happening. We don't know now if they'll put the port back in next week. If so, it means more sugery and hopefully this time more observation so he doesn't get infected again.

It's hard to see him back in that ward. It was hard to go back to the ward and see some kids we had seen last time we were there. It was harder still to know that Blake wasn't there as he had passed on. Zack's nurse knew Blake, and we traded some stories tonight and had some laughs about how great Blake was. That helped us a bit, laughing. These kids have to deal with so much at such a young age. It's hard to believe. I never could have imagined going through this as a parent myself. I know as hard as it is seeing Zack go through this, right now we're doing much better than some kids. They and their families are all in our prayers.

I'm dropping Florence and Emily off at a mall for the day tomorrow. It's so hard for them to be couped up in this small corporate apartment. As nice as it is for my work to fund this, it's not home. It's like living in a hotel with a kitchen. We'd love to be out of here soon. It's hard to get the work done on the house quickly because we're having to piece meal out the projects with various contractors. Sometimes one is delayed which delays the others, etc. Resources are in short supply around here, so we have to make due. We weren't planning on spending a bunch of money up front after buying the house. Due to Zack's condition, we want to get the work done before we move in so there's less disruption once he's there. Although his counts had been good lately, they can go up and down. Different things can cause reactions, so it's always best to be safe.

This morning my delivery of baseboards and trim came from Home Depot before I could get over there. I had them drop it on the driveway. Then I had to get over there and move the 100+ planks into the garage in case of rain. I was on a conference call for work while moving them. I was asked to give a status update on my projects while moving planks. That was a bit weird. While I was there, I also found the grout samples laying on the floor from the tile guy. I guessed what he needed and picked out the colors. I called him later and his guy was able to come by the house later and finish the grout in the laundry.

I called the plumber and he had some problem with his phone and then had a hurt kid back home, so he didn't get any work done today. He said he'd come tomorrow. We need him to change the tub out so the tile guys can finish placing tile in the upstairs bathroom. Our flooring guy's man is going to start in on the trim tomorrow. Once the trim is done, we're ready for painting. We're having some trouble securing a painter. The guys we want can't work until fall. We need the painting done to move into the house. There's another guy that has given us a bid, but we aren't sure about his work. We may have to go with him, because he's able to start soon.

Tina spoke this weekend to the people that had bid on taking care of our foliage issues in the yard. We have so much plant growth that it's allowing rodents to get into the attic. They aren't in the living space, but they gnaw at the insulation, etc. and so obviously it's good to prevent that. It was recommended we get rid of a couple trees close to the house. The bid from this team was $1000. It was only this weekend that Tina found that didn't include permanently removing the trees. They'd just cut them off and leave the roots.. and not even fill in the space with wood chips. So, we have to now find what it would take to have the trees removed. My trimmer is in storage. I'd hate to buy another one, but with all the work we have to do, that may be what has to happen. $1000 was mostly to trim plants, which is outrageous. I could pick up a trimmer for much less and do it myself. I'll save the money to spend on a tree removal service. That isn't cheap either.. but I can justify it more.

Life is so much more complicated being in this apartment in Issaquah and not having our stuff. Oh to get out of here.

For instance, I received a letter from the IRS a couple weeks ago saying we missed $20k of taxes back in 2004. All of my tax records are in storage, so I can't debate it until we move in. I can't move in until everything is done. We've had little delays that are going to make us miss our move target. The IRS says we have to pay or start payments by August 30th which is next week. Since we aren't ready to move in, I'll have to start payments. Of course that means I may give up my right to protest it. I don't have time to see a tax consultant right now. I'll just have to make due. I'm sure we payed all our taxes, but I have no way to confirm the paperwork they sent me against my own records. Argh.

I just received a letter from the Minnesota driver and vehicle services for Tina. It states that her drivers license has been withdrawn in Minnesota. They say that it's because she familed to submit a satisfactory physical exam report to them. Tina has epilepsy and hasn't had any activity since she started taking medication over a year ago. She had notes from her doctors, etc. and had gone through all the paperwork. Now, for one reason or another they've rejected her submissions and canceled her license effective 8/21. They sent this 8/15, but we only received the notice on 8/21 due to re-routed mail. She hasn't gotten her Washington license because she's been just a little busy. (understatement) Even once she gets her WA license, the letter states she will still not be able to drive in Minnesota until she completes the reinstatement requirements and receives a notice of reinstatement. Then she can pay her reinstatement fees and drive again in Minnesota. Nice.

Work is difficult. If I were able to devote my whole mental space to it, I would probably be much better off. I'm having to learn a new company and start projects with teams that I've never worked with before. I've had to deal with those kind of odds before and could handle it. I guess it's the fact that Zack's back in the hospital and I've been dealing with this stuff that makes it more difficult. Sometimes I have trouble just concentrating. Other times I just am tired of driving around from store to store and picking out vanity cabinets, paint colors, trim patterns, etc.

Anything else coming our way??? Heads up.

I'd better get to bed. It's 11pm and I have to work in the morning. (..shuttle Emily and Florence to a mall, stop in at the house, and THEN go to work.) It's helped to push some of this crap out of my head. Not that it needs to be on the internet either.. but that's what blogging has done to the world. ;)
